Webster Dictionary Widget 1.3.2 Updated

I’ve just updated the Merriam-Webster. This version will help you save definition in your iTunes lyrics.

But, I just realized. It is very hard to browse the lyric when you play a new word. Because, the pronunciation is very short. Ha.. Whatever, enjoy it.

This is Pamon. I’m a huge fan of your work. Remember me? The automator, saving pronunciation…
I was just wondering if there was any way to use lame for converting from .wav to .mp3 (it is easy to get the latest version of lame using fink or Macports). Results are incredibly good. As an example for the word apple you punch this in Terminal.
lame -vbr-new ~/Music/Webster/apple.wav ~/Music/Webster/apple.mp3

BTW, besides the quality, check out the file size. It gets smaller when you use lame rather that getting bigger which is what happens when you use itunes to convert from wav to mp3 or from wav to .m4a (AAC Encoder).

Of course, I do remember you. Actually, the saving definitions in lyrics was your idea. We should thank to you. 😀 Do you have any good ideas to improve this widget?

I just looked into lame.powerpc but I don’t seem to be able to find the propriate line to modify the syntex. There is a line that reads:
RECOMMENDED:
lame -V2 input.wav output.mp3
but that to me looked more like the “usage”. I did however change the above line to:
lame -V 0 input.wav output.mp3
but no effects on the outcome.
Could help me with that, please?

Hi Sam,

I did a couple of things. First I removed 2itunes.scpt lame.i386 lame.powerpc (couldn’t rm 2itunes copy.scpt) and then modified the webster.js , i.e. deleted the followings:

lamefilename = “\/Users\/” + userName + “\/Music\/Webster\/” + lookupword;
widget.system(websterWidgetFolder + “lame.” + arch + ” ” + lamefilename + “.wav ” + lamefilename + “.mp3”, null);

Now that stops the import.

Then I wrote the following shell script.

#!/bin/bash

mlame -r -o -V0 ~/Music/Webster/*.wav

open ~/Music/Webster/*.mp3

You need to get the mlame in order for it to work. You can get it from here:

http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mlame/mlame.tar.gz

Then tried to make a daemon job of it. Now that’s where I stock. launchd drops the job for some reason (do the “launchctl list” before and after dowloading a pronounciation).
Couple of guesses:
1. the lame in the widget is not fully disabled so it interferes with the job.
2. my shell scripting sucks. I can’t get it to wait until the file is played by iTunes. And can’t figure out the “wait” command either (I’m gonna tell you how that could become handy in a sec). So you end up having files reside in the ~/Music/Webster/ directory. But what if I could use the “wait” command? Well, then one option would be to add the following to the shell
rm ~/Music/Webster/*.mp3
What do you think?

Here is daemon to make it work
You need to have ~/Documents/scripts/ included in your PATH. Or you can change the ProgramArguments to whatever is convenient.
